Real estate is often seen as a numbers game: listings, offers, contracts, and closings. However, after four years in the field, it becomes clear that success is not just about transactions. It’s about relationships, trust, and understanding the unique stories behind every home. So, let’s rewind to where it all started and what those first few years in real estate really looked like for me.

The First Year: Learning the Ropes

When I first started in real estate, it honestly felt like jumping straight into a whirlwind. That first year was a lot of trial and error, super late nights, and yes… a few tears along the way. I was just trying to figure everything out while building a client base and getting as much experience as possible.

At the time, the focus was mostly on getting deals done and learning the process, one transaction at a time. I also leaned heavily on my aunt, who taught me so much about real estate and answered my calls at all hours. It wasn’t always pretty, but that first year taught me a lot and set the foundation for everything that came after.

Some key lessons from that year include:

  • Understanding local markets: Learning the nuances of neighborhoods, pricing trends, and buyer preferences.

  • Mastering paperwork and processes: Contracts, disclosures, and deadlines required careful attention.

  • What you put in is what you get out: The effort, the time, and the hustle all matter.

  • Building a network: Connecting with lenders, inspectors, and other agents was essential.

  • Handling rejection: Not every lead turned into a sale, and resilience became crucial.

During that time, I was really just focused on gaining confidence and proving I could do the job. It didn’t take long for me to realize that if I only focused on the transactions, I was missing the bigger picture of what this business is really about.

Growing Into a Trusted Advisor

As I gained more experience, I realized real estate is about so much more than just buying and selling houses. It’s about helping people make one of the biggest decisions of their lives. That shift made me focus less on the transaction and more on building real relationships with my clients

Key changes included:

  • Listening more deeply: Understanding clients’ needs, fears, and dreams beyond the checklist.

  • Educating clients: Explaining market conditions, financing options, and potential risks clearly.

  • Being available: Prompt communication and support throughout the process builds trust.

  • Personalizing service: Tailoring strategies to each client’s unique situation.

  • It's not about my timeline: Every client moves at their own pace, and the job is simply to guide them along the way.

For example, I once worked with a client who was moving to the U.S. from overseas and didn’t have her car yet because it was still being shipped. I ended up driving her to every showing and inspection while we searched for the right home.

We actually got to know each other really well during all those drives, just talking about life, the move, and everything in between. Moments like that go way beyond the transaction and turn into real relationships. She now comes to every client event I host, no matter how far the drive is.

From Transactions to Relationships

The biggest transformation came from shifting the mindset from closing deals to building relationships. Real estate is about helping clients find the right home, not just any home, and being there for them through big life moments.

Sometimes that means celebrating a first home, and other times it means supporting someone who is leaving a home they’ve lived in for 20+ years. That shift changed everything for me. Instead of focusing on transactions, the focus became building real relationships and guiding people through one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

Looking Ahead: Continuing the Real Estate Journey

Four years in real estate have shown that success is built on trust and connection. The journey from transactional to personal is ongoing, with each client offering new lessons and opportunities to grow. The goal is to keep refining the approach, staying curious, and always putting people first.

For anyone starting out or feeling stuck in the transactional mindset, remember that every home has a story, and every client deserves to be heard. Real estate is not just about properties, it’s about helping people find a place to call home.

If you are considering buying or selling, look for an agent who values your story and will guide you with care. That personal touch makes all the difference.
